John Black, one of Christchurch Brother United’s two new English strikers, takes the ball away from the McKee Nelson United left back, John Enoka, in last Sunday’s Rothmans Soccer League match at English Park. The introduction of the 27-year-old Black and John Hanson, five years younger, strengthens United’s link with Bradford City, the English club which was the scene of last week-end’s tragic fire.

Hanson spent five years as an apprentice and full professional, before moving to Scarborough and, last season, Goole Town in the northern premier league. Black was at Bradford for two seasons until he teamed up with Hanson at Goole Town. A full Football Association badge holder and Scottish youth international, Black scored 29 times in the season just ended, and Hanson 22. Black opened his New Zealand account by

scoring United’s only goal on Sunday in its 2-1 loss to Nelson. Another United player, David Jackson, has also spent time at Bradford City before coming to New Zealand. Jackson was missing from the United line-up on Sunday, but, after a disappointing display against Nelson, he is likely to return alongside Black and Hanson when United plays DB Wellington at the Basin Reserve on Sunday.
