Northern Marianas now ‘nuclear-free’

NZPA-AP Saipan The Northern Mariana Islands, from where America launched bombers laden with the world’s first atomic bombs, has declared itself a nuclear-free zone. Governor Pedro Tenorio signed a law prohibiting nuclear weapon materials or reactors within 320 km of the island chain, north of Guam.

The United States Government is exempt from the law if its use of nuclear energy is related to foreign affairs and defence under a section of a commonwealth convenant for the island Government.

The law also prohibits dumping of nuclear waste. On August 6, 1945, the American B-29 bomber

Enola Gray flew from Tinian to drop an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Tinian is across a 4.Bkm strait from Saipan, the northern Marianas’ population centre. Saipan was the capital of Japan’s Pacific territories until June 15, 1944, when United States military forces seized the 22.5km10ng island in bloody fighting which claimed thousands of American and Japanese lives.
