Govt asked to clarify meat planning policy

The farming community has a right to know what role the Meat Industry Council will take in the future, says the Opposition spokesman on meat and wool, Mr Dennis Marshall. The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, had indicated a change in direction for the council but had not made it clear exactly what changes he intended, said Mr Marshall. “I believe that farmers have a right to know what the Minister has in mind. The farming community gets what’s left after the middlemen take out their share. They deserve to be consulted and we want the Minister to tell us whether farmers will have some say in any new structure he is planning. “The Labour Government

has created a climate of great uncertainty and changes to the Meat Industry Council would be further fuel to that uncertainty,” he said.

Last week Mr Moyle said the Government saw a clear role for the council in fostering a return to private enterprise marketing of export sheep meats.
