Nats’ pledge on irrigation

Timaru reporter

Support for irrigation would be restored under a National Government, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr McLay, pledged last evening. Opening his party’s campaign for the Timaru byelection, Mr McLay said that National would scrap Labour's Budget policy which had “killed irrigation schemes stone-dead.” “I have been told that there will not be a major irrigation scheme that gets off the ground until things

are changed,” he said. The development of irrigation and rural water supply schemes would be given a high priority for investment under a National Government.

Mr McLay said that water was the lifeblood of South Canterbury. “National regards water as one of the keys to regional development. We know that profitability to the community, as well as to the individual, must be the base on which irrigation schemes proceed,” he said.
