Babbage —review

“Charles Babbage; Pioneer of the Computer.” By Anthony Hyman. Oxford University Press, 1984. 287 pp.

This paperback edition of a book first published in 1982 is a biography of a nineteenth century Englishman considered to be the great ancestral figure of computing. Babbage’s work in constructing “Analytical Engines” is likely to have been one of the sources of inspiration for Alan Turing’s “Turing Machine,” a theoretical tool fundamental to modern theory of computation. (Turing himself the subject of a recently-writ-ten, critically-acclaimed book.)

Although offering a readable account of Babbage’s developments in mathematics, computation and industrial science, “Charles Babbage; Pioneer of the Computer” is firstly an interesting account of the life of a leading social figure, philosopher and militant reformer in nineteenthcentury London.
