Oceania amateur boxing finals
New Zealand boxers won four titles and were the runners-up in two other divisions at the Oceania amateur championships in Melbourne. Shane Buckley (Batamweight), Rocky Auimatangi (light middleweight), Johnny Wallace (featherweight) and Jimmy Peau (heavyweight) won gold medals, and Stephen Howard (light flyweight) and Tom Fusitua (middleweight) were beaten finalists.
Six championships were won by Australians and two by representatives of Chinese Taipei. Peter Mathews, the Australian light heavyweight who upset Kevin Barry, of New Zealand, in the semi-finals, lost to his countryman, Armin Basic, on points. But another Kevin Barry was successful — an Australian super heavyweight by that name had a points win over Roy Zammataro (Australia).
