J.P.s dismiss joint charges

A man was discharged, after a preliminary hearing in the District Court yesterday, on a joint charge that with another man he robbed the Stewart Island postmaster, Innes Kenneth Dunstan, of $193 in Christchurch on January 30. After hearing evidence of prosecution witnesses, Messrs J. H. Christensen and C. Fisk, Justices of the Peace, upheld submissions by defence counsel (Mr T.

W. Fournier) that there was insufficient evidence to commit the defendant, Kevin Gary Pyke, aged 22, a labourer, for trial by jury. The complainant told of being robbed in the inner city after being accompanied by three men he had met, but did not identify the defendant in court as an assailant. Sergeant W. P. Creasey prosecuted.
