Fish transfers at port

Four Japanese fishing trawlers will transfer their cargoes on to two fish carriers, or “mother ships,” at Lyttelton over the next week. One of the carriers the Suruga Maru arrived in port on Wednesday. The trawler Azuchi Maru is expected to arrive today and she will moor alongside the mother ship and begin the transfer.

The Azuchi Maru will offload about 1100 case tonnes (55,000 cases) of frozen fish, mainly orange roughy. This is expected to take about five days, and another trawler the Akagi Maru should arrive on Wednesday to offload a similar quantity of fish. The second, smaller fish carrier the Tokuryu Maru is expected on Sunday, along with the trawler Daishin Maru 17. After taking on fish from that trawler, the Tokuryu Maru will load with fish from a second trawler the Daishin Maru 23, which is expected in port on Tuesday. The Suruga Maru is owned by the Hohsui Corporation of Japan, and is working in New Zealand waters in a joint venture with the Nelson firm, Sealord, Ltd. The Tokuryu Maru is owned by Kyo Kuyo Company, Ltd. The Lyttelton Harbourmaster, Captain Jack Barbour, said that the Suruga Maru, at 4346 gross registered tons, and the Azuchi Maru, at 2800 tons, were two of the largest ships to transfer fish inside the port. Captain Barbour also said it was rare for two fish carriers to be taking on fish at the same time in the port. ARRIVALS Spirit of Free Enterprise (7 a.m.), 1204, Wellington (Pacifica).
