New transport for disabled
Michael Yeatman, aged 20, Is wheeled aboard a specially designed wheelchair minibus by Mrs Barbara Garrett at the Crippled Children Society premises in Kilmarnock Street, Riccarton, yesterday. The society was formally handed the keys to the vehicle yesterday at a function to celebrate the culmination of two years effort in raising funds for it.
Society representatives regarded the $53,000 minibus as a milestone in transport for the disabled. Motor parts for the vehicle were imported from
Europe and assembled by Cresta Craft, Ltd, of Christchurch. It is a front-wheel drive which enables the vehicle floor to be sufficiently low for ramp access. It also has removable chairs and will accommodate up to nine passengers in wheelchairs plus three others seated.
The society’s manager, Mr Robert Mitchell, said that as well as providing “luxury travel” the vehicle cost a third of the price of an ordinary minibus to run.
Contributions to the minibus were made by the community and various sponsors.
