N.Z. tennis suffers fall in revenue

PA Wellington New Zealand tennis is now paying for last year’s disappointing Davis Cup loss to Paraguay according to the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association chairman, Mr lan Wells. While Jeff Simpson was sharpening up his squad for the eastern zone cup tie against China in Wellington tomorrow, Mr Wells was ruefully pondering the fall in revenue with New Zealand bowing out of the world top 16. “It would appear as though we are now receiving our penance for last year,” said Mr Wells yesterday. “We have three home ties this year and it’s costing us about 525,000 for each match.”

Mr Wells said the main challenge facing the

N.Z.L.T.A. this year was steering clear of a six figure Davis Cup deficit.

He said his association enjoyed the promotion of this weekend’s tie but would be worse off with three away games. “We have to fork out for round the world fares to get our guys here anyway.” “That loss to Paraguay last year was the crunch game for us.

“We should not lose to that type of country, at home, on our own grass surface.” Should New Zealand return to the top 16 next year he said the N.Z.L.T.A. would promptly seek to recoup 1985’s financial lost ground.

The prizemoney and gates were worth three times as much in the world group. New Zealand would play Equador, Australia and

India at home if it drew any of those sides and on the toss of a coin could meet at home the glamour sides, the United States or Sweden.

Thus, Chris Lewis, Russell Simpson and company must now endure the year among Eastern Zone minnows.

In 1982, Simpson and Lewis figured in New Zealand’s best Davis Cup effort of recent times, toppling Spain and Italy before losing to France in the semifinals.

The United States chalked up its twenty-fourth Davis Cup victory beating France 4-1 in the final at Grenoble.

Should Jeff Simpson’s squad beat China at the weekend New Zealand will meet either Korea or the Philippines in the eastern zone final at home on October 4, 5 and 6.
