Historic farm to be sold

One of Mid-Canterbury’s historic properties, Springfield Farm, will be auctioned by Wrightsons on July 19, a spokesman for the company, Mr John Davidson, confirmed yesterday. The company would advertise the sale by auction throughout New Zealand, he said. It involved 785 acres of what many considered the best land in Mid-Canter-bury, which had been farmed by the late Mr Bob Maw for about 14 years. Duncan Cameron bought the original Springfield run of 21,000 acres in 1869. It employed 100 people in normal times and double that number during the harvest.

Duncan Cameron was instrumental in introducing the water-race system to Mid-Canterbury and the races extended to 70 kilometres before he finished development. After he died, the run was sold off in blocks, some paddocks then being subdivided by farmers into their present paddock systems. Owners after Duncan Cameron and before Mr Maw were Messrs Dowling, Taylor, and Ruddenklau.
