State servants warned on transport costs

PA Dunedin State servants have been ticked off for using department vehicles instead of public transport when travelling to and from airports. In a circular to permanent department heads from the State Services Commission, the secretary, Mr A. C. Davis, said that at some airports departmental vehicles had been seen with only one passenger, ignoring bus services which in many cases could perform an identical service at far less cost to the department and taxpayers. The Public Service

Manual says departmental and Public Service Garage vehicles are to be used only when it means a clear saving in costs or is justified on the ground-of necessity and not mere convenience. . Mr Davis wrote: “Departments are, therefore, requested to review their existing practices to see whether more use cannot be made of airport bus services. “Anything that can be done to keep these services financially viable will render a public service, as well as effecting proper economies in the use of public moneys."
