Young Maoris attend hui
PA Hamilton More than 200 young Maoris are expected to gather at Ngaruawahia’s Turangawaewae marae for their annual huinga rangatahi (youth hui) this weekend.
The organiser, Ms Erana Keelan, of Waikato University, said Maori representatives on the National Youth Council would present proposals at the hui for a runanga rangatahi (Maori youth council). Other highlights would be addresses by the Minister for the Arts and member of Parliament for Eastern Maori, Mr Tapsell; the Alcoholic Liquor Advisory Council’s Maori adviser, Mr Maru Reirino; and a trade unionist and actor, Mr Anzac Wallace.
Other speeches would be made by the Maori political activist, Ms Donna Awatere; a black South African, Makgolo Makgolo; and a Tuhoe elder, Mr John Rangihau. The huinga rangatahi is held every year in or near one of the university cities.
