Sandhills crib wall wanted
A sandhill crib wall in Marine Parade should be extended lOOrn from the New Brighton Surf Club to Lonsdale Street, the New Brighton Pier and Foreshore Society told the Christchurch City Council yesterday. Mr Orme Innes told the council’s parks and recreation committee that such a wall would improve the untidy appearance of sandhills where they reached the road.
He said the society was willing to subsidise the
work with $5OOO, which would almost cover the cost of the concrete. A retired builder, Mr William Jeffreys, would volunteer as construction supervisor. The council has estimated that the crib wall and associated work, such as excavation and a foundation for the wall, might cost about $21,000. “It is tidiness more than anything,” Mr Innes said of the need for a wall. Council officers will report next month on the proposal.
