Woman, 22, found dead in cell
A woman, aged 22, was found hanged by her sweatshirt in a cell of the Christchurch Central Police Station on Monday evening. The police have not released her name. Chief Inspector Maitland Lawrence said yesterday that the police were satisfied that no-one else was involved in her death. The woman was arrested in Spreydon on Monday afternoon for possession of
an offensive weapon, a razor. Mr Lawrence said that she was thoroughly searched before being put in a single cell. Nothing suggested that she might have been suicidal. The woman was put in the cell at 5.26 p.m. and checked at 5.56 p.m. She was found dead at 6.25 p.m. The woman failed to respond to mouth-to-mouth and cardio-pulmo-nary resuscitation.
