Kiwi Shipping dismisses 45 employees
PA Wellington The only vessel in New Zealand’s newest shipping line, Kiwi Shipping, has been laid up at Wellington and her 45 employees dismissed. The move results from last week’s High Court injunction against Kiwi’s managing director, Mr Oddvar Andersen, and another shareholder, Mr Tony Johnston, from having anything to do with the vessel Kiwi in New Zealand coastal waters for five months.
The injunction was sought by the Christchurch-based Pacifica Shipping against the pair for allegedly misusing confidential information obtained while they had worked for Pacifica.
Mr Andersen said yesterday that the ship would be laid up until September when the court order expired.
The unions had been told of the effect, on staff and understood the situation, he said.
Kiwi’s proposed coastal shipping service would be delayed for five months but the company had sufficient resources to carry it through.
Kiwi is on charter from an overseas company. Mr Andersen said he was not prepared to say what the charges were but admitted they were more expensive than the berthage fee of about $3OOO a month.
