Magnitude favoured at Awapunui today

Special correspondent Wellington The course specialist, Magnitude, with the leading rider, David Walsh, up, looks certain to be a short priced favourite for the Jarden 1600, the first leg of the Marton Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double at Awapuni today. The event, worth $15,000, has drawn a good field and Magnitude’s chances will be helped by the fact that he has drawn nicely at No. 5. Magnitude’s record on Awapunui is outstanding. He has won seven times from nine starts and his most recent success there came last March in the Higgins Mile. Just to show that his top

efforts are not confined to Awapunui alone, Magnitude, in one run since, was beaten by just half a head by Eastern Joy in the Eastern at Ellerslie a month ago. It has been a successful time for his trainer, Margaret Bull, who trains the four-year-old for her brother, Jim.

Apart from the success of Magnitude, Lacka Reason and Sovereign Parade, which are now spelling, the St Leger placing of Infantry, and the second of Mussella in the Cuddle Stakes last week, confirm that her team is shaping well. The success of Walsh has been amply chronicled.

Levin runners may present the biggest threat in the form of the Searle stablemates, Zelazny and Kar Dan, and the mare, Kosha.

Buffy Beaufort and In the Glen are South Island visitors which will be looking to improve, while Old Nick, in the hands of Brian York, is an interesting runner which failed by a nose to win over 1200 m at Avondale at the end of April. The second leg of the double is the Jarden Corporation Handicap, and the wanganui mare, Wren, looks overdue for a change of luck.

She finished well back when forced wide in the Hawke’s Bay Cup and she did not have much luck when ninth in the Gloaming Stakes after being wide for a good part of the contest. The three-year-old, Fort Cheval, a highweight winner at Awapuni in March, has gone on to win at Wanganui and was placed in the Championship Stakes at Avondale.
