Red Dragon

The Elmwood Players will present their first production for children during the May holidays. Their production of “The Tale of the Red Dragon” will open at the Playhouse in Fulton Avenue on Friday, May 10. It is directed by June Harvest, and is a fantasy tale for children based on a Chinese tale. Like many other popular children’s stories it is based on the idea of a quest. Lee sets out to find the lair of the Red Dragon in the mountains to charge him with cruelty because he has demanded half of all the earnings of the villagers for himself. In staging the play, June Harvest has called on certain Chinese theatrical

traditions. For example, the Property Man sits on stage throughout the play assisting the actors with sound effects where required and producing from his store an astonishing array of props. The cast includes David Thomas, Frances Celmins, Kevin Bolt, Julie Armstrong, Mary Clark, Richard Muller, Wyn Williams, Linda Pascoe, Kerren Pack, Nadine Rattray and Lisa Sillifant. Set design is by Brendan Wilcox and lighting by Andrew Davidge. The play will run every day from May 10 till May 18 at 6.30 p.m. except Sunday when the show will be at 2 p.m. There will also be a matinee on Saturday, May 18, at 2 p.m.
