Canterbury has likely material for Cuddle Stakes

By

J. J. BOYLE

Victory has eluded the South Island so far in the Wellington Racing Club’s Cuddle Stakes, but Canterbury stables will put promising material into this year’s race, to be run at Trentham tomorrow.

Queen’s Pal, an in-form Buffy Beaufort, and the lightly weighted stablemates In the Glen and Harbour Flo will make for one of the strongest South Island bids yet to win the 1600 m feature race for females.

Queen’s Pal has her opportunities limited when the tracks firm, but she gives generously of her talents when the footing is easy, and she returns to Trentham after one race this time up, but with a previous win over 1600 m on the course on her spring record. That victory was in the Huttons Handicap run over the same distance in October, and came at her second to last start before she was put aside. Queen’s Pal will carry 55kg in tomorrow’s T.A.B. trifecta race and second leg of the T.A.B; double.

She is 2kg below Silver Elm, the top weight and likely favourite, and I.skg above Buffy Beaufort, which has toiled rewardingly at 1600 m and beyond this season for the Riccarton stable of Tom Lalor.

Buffy Beaufort won over a middle distance at the North Canterbury autumn meeting. Her last-start second was probably equally meritorious. She was only a nose from the hot favourite, Canterbury Belle, in the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Lion Brown Handicap on April 13.

Silver Elm and Ikon appear to be the two most formidable of the North Island runners. Silver Elm’s last three runs have been in distinguished company at Ellerslie, the best of them being a second to The Filbert in the Air New Zealand Stakes. The last time she raced left-handed was at Te Rapa on February 9 when she trounced a field of metric milers in the brilliant time of 1:33.86.

Ikon was a surprise Cuddle Stakes winner from the tail of the handicap last year, but her last-start win at Te Awamutu assures her of a position high on the list of fancies this time. Chance for Gold, winner of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s 3ZB Classic in his only appearance at the Riccarton Easter carnival, looks equal to the task of adding the Gloaming Stakes to his record tomorrow.

The Otaki trainer, Ken Thomson, has restricted Chance for Gold to one start since that Riccarton win, and it yielded a fast-finish-ing fourth at Hastings. Miles Better, Our Boyfriend, and Bidston Hill, those above Chance for Gold in the handicap, are veterans without the scope for improvement that is within reach of the Otaki five-year-old.
