Spitfire in place

The Brevet Club’s second replica Spitfire was lowered into place on its plinth outside the Memorial Avenue clubrooms yesterday morning. The original aircraft was taken down from the plinth in February last year to be given to the R.N.Z.A.F. Museum at Wigram. In exchange for the original aircraft, the Air Force agreed to make a fibreglass replica for the club. The replica was put in place in August last year but destroyed in an arson attack in October. Only the propellor was salvaged for the second replica, which

has also been made by the Air Force. A Brevet Club spokesman said last evening that about 530,000 has been raised by the Spitfire restoration fund and it is hoped that this will be enough to pay for the replacemewnt. A 1.8 metre fence, similar to that used round car sales yards, has been erected round the Spitfire to deter vandals.
