Halswell still unbeaten
Halswell retained its unbeaten rugby league record at the Show Grounds last evening, but not until it had overcome an eight-point deficit to head off Addington, 22-18. An upset was very much in prospect when Steven Mather’s try just after the interval had Addington clear, 18-10. However, Halswell managed to gain temporary control of proceedings to touch down three times in 11 minutes and provide it with the narrow advantage it held until the finish.
Halswell received good value from its props, Steve Davis — who was “man of the match” — and Robbie Rushton, while Geordie Condon and White were incisive three-quarters. Papanui came from even further behind — it managed just two of the 14 firsthalf points — to draw with Linwood, 14-14. That it shared the competition points was due to more commitment throughout its ranks and the spectacular try-scoring deeds of its prop, Doug Thompson.
Paul Truscott’s outstanding form in the Linwood pack earned him the “man of the match” award. Scorers.—
Halswell 22 (C. White two, G. Grut, S. Davis, G. Condon tries; P. W. Bancroft goal) beat Addington 18 (M. Green, W. J. Parker, S. Mather tries; P. A. Connell three goals). Half-time. Addington, 12-10. Referee, Mr K. R. Blackler. Linwood 14 (J. Rees, J. Whittaker tries; L. E. Hudson three goals) drew with Papanui 14 (D. M. Thompson two tries; A. J. Wildermoth three goals). Half-time, Linwood, 12-2. Referee, Mr T. Drake.
