Half-brother to Ardross for stud
PA Palmerston North Karol, a half-brother to champion English racehorse, Ardross, has been bought by Australasian Breeding Stables for stud duties in New Zealand. The bay, which was bred in Ireland in 1978 by Kalamoun from Le Melody (by Levmoss), will begin duties at Richard Gould’s Patawa stud at Ohaupo, near Cambridge, this year. Karol’s half-brother, Ardoss, is one of the most outstanding racehorses seen on European racetracks in recent years. He won 14 of his 24 starts, 13 of which were group races, and finished second in Akiyda’s Prix de I’Arc de Triomphe. Karol is by Kalamoun, an ill-fated sire with an extraordinary career at stud. Twice a group 1 winner himself, Kalamoun died prematurely and is represented by only 87 live foals. Remarkably he has left 21 individual stakes winners,
including 12 group winners, six of which are group 1 winners. . Kalamoun’s progeny have won 235 races to date for stakes of about SNZ4 million. Kampala, a group 3 winner by Kalamoun, has proved an instant success at stud in Europe. He was the champion first season sire (races won) in England in 1984 as well as leading sire on the scale of individual winners. Karol was an excellent racehorse himself. He raced only ten times for two wins, four placings and stakes of $NZ141,317. He won the listed Trigo Stakes at Leopardstown by five lengths. Karol was group 2 placed in the Ballymoss Stakes at the Curragh in his last season of racing. He went under by a neck on that occasion conceding the winner 21 pounds. Karol will stand at a fee of $3500.
