Likely Lord has stamina for Methven test

By

G. K. YULE

The South Otago-trained eight-year-old, Likely Lord, looks poised to gain his second win in Canterbury in a month when he contests the J. McCloy Memorial Handicap at the Methven Trotting Club’s meeting tomorrow.

Likely Lord could hardly have been more impressive when he beat Lady El and Richina over 2600 m at Addington Raceway on March 30. One week later he came in for confident support in a similar race, but ninth was the best he could manage behind Lord Louie. However, he received a rocky run in the middle part and it was not really surprising that he could not carry on, as the winner recorded 3min 19.9 s for the distance.

Likely Lord has shown a liking for grass tracks. He is a dour staying type and his great reserves of stamina should carry him right into the thick of the finish. Freightman went his best race for some time when he batted into fourth behind Our Mana in the Lion Brown Easter Cup. His handicap of 30m might offset the drop in class he will encounter, but should he produce a peak run he should be more than a match for the majority of the field. There will be solid support, too, for two renowned grass track exponents in Ruthless and Coastal Trader. Ruthless realised much of the potential many had claimed for him when he won a sharp sprint rating 2min 1.7 s for 2000 m at Addington on April 6. He has always appealed more as a stayer than a sprinter and in his latest form he must be one of the leading chances. Coastal Trader is seldom guilty of a poor run on grass tracks whether they are firm or easy. He has not raced since he was beaten half a head by Delark over 3200 m at Ashburton on March 23. Nostradamus, Lew Foy, Regal Nugent, Delark and Soxygen have all shown splendid form at times and they might not be far away at the end. The promising Ashburtontrained five-year-old, Time Again, not the most reliable beginner, will only have to move off smoothly to be the one to beat in the second leg, the Lyttle’s Transport Handicap, a race in which the chances of Carolyn Scott and Watbro Ford are also highly rated.
