Railways ‘inefficient’
NZPA-AFP Moscow The 142,000 km Soviet railway network, traditionally one of the weakest links in the country’s economy, is “grossly inefficient,” ’ the party newspaper, “Pravda,” has asserted. The newspaper said that rail freight had fallen in the first quarter of this year about 10 million tonnes because of a lack of “planning and efficiency.” It said that the worst affected were the paper and timber industries because of failure to deliver the contents of 100,000 waggons.
