Promising future for fitch farmers
The New Zealand fitch farmer can look forward to a promising future, going by the last round of world pelt auctions.
Last year’s sales showed a disappointing return, mainly because of a large percentage of low-quality pelts from the first-time farmers.
The average price for New Zealand pelts for the 1984-85 series of auctions were ?24 for male pelts and $22 for female pelts. The top prices for New
Zealand pelts were $42 for male pelts and $4O for female pelts. The New Zealand prices were still below the average
world auction price of $3B. The top world price was $l4l. The New Zealand fitch farmer can expect an even higher average pelt price
for the 1985-86 auction season. The quality of stock and experience will create an even higher standard of pelts, which will become accepted by world buyers.
