View of Mexico
Sir,—l suspect that San Cristobal de las Casas is the “essence of Mexico” for Wendy Blaxland (“The Press,” April 9) as she probably found it most met with her preconceived notions of what Mexico should be. I would not wonder at the Indian men regarding her coldly had her attitude then been as patronising as that shown in her article. Travel writers have a responsibility to remove prejudices ana not reinforce them. They should respectfully present a country and its people to those who cannot visit it themselves. And p.s., Mexico is no dirtier than any other part of the world. — Yours, etc., MONICA DERRINGTON DE ACHA. April 11, 1985.
