Kim Novak is double in Hitchcock contest

The response of more than 100 letters to last week’s competition being held in connection with the season of Alfred Hitchcock films at the Academy shows that there is still a great interest in the work of this great director of mysterythrillers. Although people were asked to answer a trick question, I am pleased to report that more than half of the letters received had the complete correct answer. The question was to name the stars in the photo printed last week (see also below), and the Hitchcock film in which they appeared

together. The trick was that the picture showed Kim Novak twice, in the two roles she played with James Stewart in “Vertigo.” As expected, many readers were tricked by this doubling up, and their typical answers were: Kim Novak, James Stewart and Barbara Bel Geddes in “Vertigo”; or Kim Novak, James Stewart and Shirley MacLaine in “The Trouble With Harry.” These people had obviously done their homework on Hitchcock movies. A closer look, however, might have shown them that the woman on the right was not Bel Geddes, although she

appeared with Novak and Stewart in “Vertigo.” Also, Novak and Stewart did not appear with MacLaine in “The Trouble With Harry.” Despite this trick question, which I feared might fool more people, more than 20 fully correct answers had arrived at “The Press" by Saturday lunch time. The first 10 correct entries, which have won both Coronet paperback of Alfred Hitchcock’s horror stories, and a double-pass ticket to see one of the five Hitchcock films being shown during the next few weeks, were: Kathleen D. De Gould, Denise Ryan and Kerry-Ann Boyle, of Christchurch 1; C. S. McCallum, of Christchurch 2; M. A. Greenlees, of Christchurch 4; J. M. Bendle, of Christchurch 5; R. G. Thompson, of Christchurch 7; L. J. Cairns and Bev Sampson, of Ashburton; and Hamish Petrie, of Rangiora.

The next 10 correct entries, which have won copies of the paperback, were: Irmgaard van Schouten, of Christchurch 1; R. J. Spratt and P. T. Gibson, of Christchurch 4; M. A. Chiba, Simon Hollander and Joan Stockbridge, of Christchurch 5; D. Cant and M. David, of Christchurch 6; Hugo Titman, of Burnham; and Margie De Goldi, of West Melton. The books and tickets have already been posted to the winners. The double passes may be used at the

Academy at any time to see one of the five films being screened during the Hitchcock season: “Rear Window,” “Vertigo,” “The Man Who Knew Too Much,” “The Trouble With Harry” and “Rope.” “Rear Window,” which started the season last week-end, proved so successful that it is expected to be screened for at least two more weeks. The others will then follow, their length of screening depending on how well they are received at the box office.
