Teachers’ strike backed

NZPA-AP Noumea A strike called yesterday by teachers and civil servants in New Caledonia, protesting against the death of a teacher stoned by Melanesians, was strongly supported, authorities said. All teachers stopped work in Noumea and on the island’s east coast, with 80 per cent out on the west coast, while municipal services, the Post Office, banks, civil aviation and other services also closed. Simone Heurtaux, a physical education teacher, died on Monday when hit by a stone as her car passed demonstrating Melanesians on a country road. The police arrested a number of Melanesians for questioning. The Kanak Socialist National Liberation Party, leading Melanesian independence efforts on the French island, expressed regret over the killing and called on activists to concentrate on an economic boycott.

It said tribes in the area had recently been harassed by the police. About 2000 strikers marched to the French High Commission offices in Noumea yesterday and presented a petition.
