Swedish Navy finds ‘intruder’

NZPA-AP Stockholm The Swedish Navy dropped anti-submarine grenades yesterday on a suspected intruder after receiving signs of what military officials called "alien submerged activities’’ off the entrance to Karlshamn Harbour on Sweden’s southeast coast, according to the national news agency TT. The agency, citing military sources, said it was not known whether the target was hit.

They were quoted as saying the grenades were fired in swarms about 500 metres from the port entrance and were preset to explode at different depths. The incident was about 30km from the Karlskrona Archipelago, scene for the country’s longest and most expensive submarine hunt in March and April, 1984. It was near the same area that the Soviet whiskey-class submarine U--137 reportedly ran aground in October, 1981.
