More families in State houses
PA Wellington About 5400 families were housed in State rental homes in the last financial year, an increase of more than 1100 on the previous year. The figure of 5395 families compared with 4268 in' the previous financial year, said the Minister of Housing, Mr Goff. The commitment of the previous Government to sell State houses reduced the State housing stock to its lowest point in seven years,
i he said. : Combined with withl drawal of an estimated I 15,000 to 20,000 private secs tor rental units from the [ market during the rent freeze, pressures on the corporation’s rental stock were ' expected to increase, Mr Goff said. However, the moratorium on State house sales and increases in the State housing programme would ensure that the corporation’s capacity to place tenants also increased.
