Cost-cutting ‘folly’
PA Wellington Privatisation of meat inspection in freezing works would make New Zealand meat less attractive on world markets, said the president of the Public Service Association, Mr Colin Hicks, yesterday. A report for the Meat Industry Council released on Thursday said New Zealand’s meat inspection system was probably the most expensive in the world, and
recommended that plants be delegated responsibility for non-disease quality control with private inspection firms able to compete for inspection business. . “New Zealand’s main export markets demand an independent and efficient inspection service,” Mr Hicks said.
“Cost-cutting in this area would be folly and would risk putting the whole industry in jeopardy.”
