Black runner barred
NZPA-Reuter Boston A black South African runner was barred yesterday from the Boston Marathon on Monday because of a ban by The Athletic Congress (T.A.C.) on South African contestants in international sporting events. The marathon’s sponsor, the Boston Athletic Association (8.A.A.), told the South African,-Mark Platjes, that the T.A.C. rules prohibit him from running. The T.A.C.
passed the rules to protest against South Africa’s apartheid racial segregation policy. “I’m very disappointed but only mildly surprised at their action,” Platjes said while preparing to return home. “I hope to get in some training and be ready, perhaps, for our (South African) national championships on May 4. “The B.A.A. said they would love to have me run, but they’ve got to follow orders,” Platjes said.
