Year’s P.D. for welfare fraud

PA Auckland A woman convicted of receiving $23,243 of social welfare benefits to which she was not entitled has been sentenced in Auckland to 12 months periodic detention. Vaione Pau, aged 35, of Onehunga, had offended because of an unreasonable burden on her to cater for her mother, father, and other relatives in Samoa, her counsel, Mr David Brown, told Judge Blackwood in the District Court. The Judge said he had intended to sentence Pau to imprisonment, but had changed his mind after listening to Mr Brown’s submissions. He did this with some hesitation, as such offending was prevalent and difficult to detect. Pau had previously been convicted of wilfully omitting to tell an officer of the Social Welfare Department that between September, 1980, and January, 1984, she worked for the Auckland Milk Corporation while continuing to receive a benefit.
