Knight bidding for speedboat record

Peter Knight, of Christchurch, will attempt to make speedboat history on Lake Ruataniwha this weekend. Already the winner of nine prestigious Masport Cup trophies, thus equalling the record of Len Southward, the Christchurch motelier clearly won last year’s cup and looks set to repeat the success. The one kilometre and a half straights of Lake Ruataniwha will suit Knight and his high-powered boat, Thef Boss. The New Brighton Power Boat Club’s other two representatives in the Masport Cup are P. G. Knight, Peter’s son, and Jack Ryan. P. G. Knight and The Godfather have impressive records, but considerable interest will centre on the return of the New Zealand speed record-holder, Ryan and Mainland Miss. Mainland Miss has been dogged with mechanical problems over the last 12 months, but the recent arrival of vital engine parts from the United States has enabled Ryan to develop his boat to its full potential. Twenty-four boats from

throughout New Zealand will take part in the Masport Cup, the fastest 10 qualifying for the final. Another important national event will be the third round of the A.W.A. Challenge series for 1650 c.c. and three-litre hydroplanes, which has attracted 14 starters. Notable entries include Mike Ryan, of Christchurch, and his 1650 c.c. hydro, Avanti, and

Terry McKinstry, of Wanganui, driving Pacemaker. Six of the 60 entries for the two-day regatta, which includes two rounds of the grand prix championship, are women drivers, including Elaine Lewis, of Kaiapoi. Mrs Ryan has a new Ryancraft, which she tried out this week. Unfortunately she blew the G-bars during the trials, but they have since been replaced.
