Steer calves sell well at Culverden sale

Steer calves sold strongly at the Culverden calf sale yesterday though the average price was slightly down on last year’s corresponding sale. Recent reductions in the beef export schedule appeared to have little effect on the confidence of fatteners who displayed a willingness to bid keenly for big-framed calves carrying plenty of condition. The sale was the first country calf sale in North Canterbury this season. Marlborough and local fanners provided most of the buying power. The yarding included 588 steers (370 last year) and 213 heifers (164). The average steer price was $2BB, compared with slightly over $3OO last year. Heifers averaged $256. Several outstanding sales were recorded, including a price of $414 for a pen of 11 Charolais-cross steers from R.

A. F. Kingscote, Waiau. Last year Charolais-cross steers from this property, formerly owned by M. F. Vernon, made $386. Another line of Charolaiscross steers sold to $390 for a pen of 12 on behalf of L H. Atkinson, Hanmer Springs. A regular vendor at Culverden, the Lands and Survey Department’s Cheddar Valley block at Waiau, offered about 300 Hereford steers and heifers, which are well known for their shifting ability. The Cheddar Valley steers averaged $302 ($3OB last year) and the heifers, $243 ($259). Most were bought by Marlborough farmers. A consignment of 131 Friesian bull calves sold to $272.
