Second stabbing arrest

The Christchurch police yesterday arrested a second person in connection with the fatal stabbing of a woman at the United Service Hotel on Tuesday. A man, aged 21, will appear in the District Court today charged with being a party to the murder of Deborah Rosemary Manuel, also known as Debbie Paul, aged 23. Detective Senior-Sergeant Michael Muddiman said that detectives arrested the man, a labourer, about 3 p.m. yesterday. A woman, aged 22, appeared in the District Court on Wednesday charged with the murder of Debbie Paul. The woman, who was granted interim suppression of name, was remanded to Sunnyside Hospital for a psychiatric examination and will next appear in court on April 17. The charges relate to the stabbing of Debbie Paul in the public bar of the United Service Hotel in Cathedral Square. It has been suggested that two knives were used in the fracas and the police believe that they might have found them.
