Farmers want tax cut to equal GST

PA Wellington Federated Farmers wants a dollar-for-dollar deal when the goods and services tax applies from next year. “For every dollar raised under GST there must be an equal reduction in personal income tax,” said the president of Federated Farmers, Mr Peter Elworthy, yesterday. “If this is not the case, many will pay increased taxation, which will negate any benefit from taxation

reform.” Mr Elworthy said this was one important aim which must be kept in mind. The other was that GST “must not be a means of funding the Budget deficit.” He said: “It is clear that if the current high levels of inflation are to be lowered, real reductions in the Government deficit must be achieved. The only way this can be successful is by reducing Government expenditure.”
