Pot smoked for war’s ill effects
PA Tauranga A Te Puke man smoked cannabis because it eased some of the ill effects of Agent Orange contracted during the Vietnam war, the Tauranga District Court was told. Eppy Kissling Ronaki, aged 34, a knifehand, admitted possession of cannabis on March 21. He appeared before Judge Wilson. Sergeant Ronald Lynch told the Court that police searched the defendant’s address and found quantities of cannabis hidden in a
hotwater cupboard and round a fire place. He told the police he was a veteran of the Vietnam war and the cannabis helped ease severe headaches. Defence counsel (Mr Richard Blackwood) said Ronaki was a distinguished war veteran who had also served in Cambodia, and had found that the cannabis eased the effects of Agent Orange contamination. “I am sure medical practitioners will give you something equally effective that is not illegal,” said the Judge, in fining Ronaki $l5O.
