Last autumn stock and produce exhibition
Exhibitors of stock and produce will have their last opportunity to show their goods at the last of the autumn agricultural and pastoral shows at Oxford tomorrow.
The show, which is a popular event for town and country folk alike, has attracted a total of 4460 entries, a slight drop on last year of 226.
Drought conditions during December and January have affected some stock entries, while some longtime competitors have since sold their properties. The gift lamb section has attracted a record 60 entries. The class is a fund raising venture for the association with the participants donating the proceeds from the lamb to the association.
The gift lamb is for one lamb of any breed which is most suitable for the precut lamb trade. It is judged on the hoof at the show, and on the hook at NCF Kaiapoi, Ltd.
The horse section once again dominates the large number of entries. A total of 1631 entries have been received for the many varied classes. This is shown by just over 100 on last year. It is the last opportunity for many competitors to show their horses for several months.
Sheep are one of the next biggest sections although they too have dropped in number, largely attributable to drought conditions and property sales. Goat, donkey, wool and dog entries have increased, along with grain and seeds, potatoes, vegetables and school entries.
A novelty competition at the show is open to anyone who wants to guess the weight of a pen of mixed stock. People will be asked the combined weight in kilograms of a goat, sheep and bobby calf. The shearing competitions will once again provide some exciting viewing for spectators. A high standard can be expected as machine shearers try to gain points in the Lion Brown title which is competed for throughout the show circuit.
