"I Community involvement
There was a tremendous amount of community involvement in the Oxford Agricultural and Pastoral show, this year’s president Mr Kevin Wells, said. Coupled with an enthusiastic and hard-working committee and a helpful secretary, it helped make the day very successful. The show also provided the opportunity for city folk to have a day in the country and enjoy the many exhibits, entertainment and competitions. Mr Wells said that the entries were much the same as in previous years. Where there had been drops, such as in the horse section, it appeared to be a trend throughout the show circuit. He was particularly pleased with the entries in the gift lamb class. This showed the tremendous J backing the association —- received from the commun- ■ <ity as all proceeds from the ■ -lambs were given to the ■ association. ■ The prize money had also I been increased for the on I the hook section of the ■ competition. First prize now ■ attracted prize money of ■ $l2O, second $75, third $4O, ■ fourth $2O, and fifth $lO. Mr Wells and his wife, Helen, farm a 128 ha mixed farm at The Warren, on the outskirts of Oxford. The farm, “Riversdale,” is running 1150 ewes and 250 hoggets. It grew 21 hectares of wheat and 11 hectares of barley. Mr Walls will be showing in the prime sheep, flock sheep and grain sections at the show.
Their eldest daughter, Julie, aged 13, attends the Rangiora High School, while Virginia, aged 11, and Phillip, aged 8, both attend The Warren school. Timothy, aged 4, will begin school next term. ■ The whole family is actively involved in sport and other organisations in Oxfo rd. Mr Wells is a past president of the Oxford Young Farmers Club, and past
chairman of the North Canterbury District Young ■ Farmers. He is also a past president of the Oxford Collie Club, and is chairman of The Warren School commit- , tee.
