Upset in table tennis
NZPA staff correspondent London New Zealand came from behind to score a big upset win over the third seeds. Nigeria, in the men’s section of the Commonwealth table tennis championships on the Isle of Man last night. The Auckland trio of Barry Griffiths, Peter Jackson and Malcolm Temperley fought back from 2-3 down to win, 5-3. The team captain, Geoff Rau, said: ‘‘On paper we shouldn’t have got a game
against them." Nigeria is seeded first in the group, with Pakistan second and New Zealand third. Results: P. Jackson beat F. Sule, 2113, 21-16; B. Griffiths lost to Y Bankole. 19-21, 15-21; M Temperley beat A. Musa, 24-22, 21-16; Griffiths lost to Sule, 1421. 20-22; Jackson lost to Musa. 21-14, 20-22, 17-21; Temperley beat Bankole, 21-17, 18-21, 2111; Griffiths beat Musa, 17-21, 21-19, 21-13; Temperley beat Sule. 21,-18. 21-19.
