Heathcote County civic awards

Voluntary community service in Heathcote County will be rewarded with civic awards from the County Council. The council decided last evening to reward community service with framed certificates’and a citation. Recipients will be chosen once every two years from public nominations. The civic awards will cover service in recreation, youth activities, social welfare, education, cultural or religious activities, and

community affairs. Cr Margaret Buchanan suggested a gift, such as a carving, could also be given occasionally with an award. Recipients of honours bestowed by the Crown will be excluded, except in exceptional circumstances. The County Chairman, Mr Oscar Alpers, said the awards were to recognise voluntary service which was not recognised at the level of the, Crown honours. The scheme will be reviewed in two years.
