Export and farm subsidies
Sir,—The removal of the “injury test” on New Zealand exports to the United States will be an excellent thing if it forces the removal of remaining subsidies on exports and farming. While I do not mind earning less than half of what professional counterparts earn in California if New Zealanders on low incomes are helped, I object strongly to contributing to retirement mansions for farmers and businessmen. The last Budget removed subsidies worth $5OOO a farmer, according to farming leaders. Obviously there is still a long way to go before the fruits of years of excessive political leverage are returned to the longsuffering taxpayers and consumers. The hollow myth of the sturdy independence of our farmers is shattered by these hand-outs and the grovelling attitude of their leaders towards threats from the United States Administration.— Yours, etc., ALAN WILKINSON.
