Last Post no longer for Malaysians
NZPA-AFP Kuala Lumpur The Malaysian armed forces are shedding British ceremonial customs it considers incompatible with Islamic beliefs, a top official said. Mohamad Yusof Abdul Rahman, Secretary-General of the Defence Ministry, said that there would no longer be any sounding of the Last Post or 'firing of a volley at funerals for Muslim soldiers. Instead, thanksgiving prayers will be held on the first Friday after the funeral, as part of the Govern- ‘ ment’s plans to assimilate Islamic values into the armed forces administration. Malaysia, which gained independence from Britain in 1957, has a largely Muslim army although Muslims make up only a little more than half of the country’s 15 million people.
