Escaper feared dead
NZPA-AFP Cape Town The first prisoner in 166 years to escape from South Africa’s best-known prison, Robben Island, near Cape Town, is feared drowned. Jan Kamfer, aged 20, escaped from the fortress island on Friday on a paddle-ski. A prison spokesman said yesterday he may have drowned during a fierce off-shore gale. The young prisoner was serving an 18-month sentence for house-breaking and theft. He was found missing after a team of prison labourers returned to their cells in the evening. A paddle-ski was found missing from one of the homes on the island shortly after Kamfer’s disappearance was reported. Prison guards were still searching for him yesterday. Robben Island had 505 medium and maximumsecurity prisoners, a Prisons Department spokesman said.
