Danger from the Left
Sir,—The week Ken Douglas became secretary of the Federation of Labour you printed my letter saying it would prove to be the darkest day in our history. During 1976-78 I had lengthy correspondence with Ministers seeking to increase the police and armed forces. On my file, Mr Muldoon’s replies of July, 1977, and May, 1978, agree that the Socialist Unity Party was dangerous but “I am watching their activity very closely.” If a strong leader could not contain them, what chance has Mr Lange? I saw Mike Moore last October, seeking assurance that Mr Lange, he and their other main lieutenants would not succumb to radical Leftists. I was told they had no “Scargills” and the Left would be held at bay. Jim Anderton’s utterances this week belie that. New Zealand is now immature. The nation’s security is at risk while Mr Lange laps up what the anti-West World Council of Churches applauds.—Yours, etc., GRAY HENDERSON.
