India clinches world series

NZPA-AAP Melbourne India won the World Championship of Cricket final by eight wickets over Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground last evening. India scored 177 for the loss of two wickets from just 47.1 overs in reply to Pakistan’s earlier total of 176 for nine from its maximum 50 overs. The not out batsmen for India were the opener, Ravi Shastri, on 63, and Dilip Vengasarker, on 18. The man of the match was awarded to the Indian opener, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who hit a brilliant 67 from 78 deliveries, including six fours and two sixes. His teammate, Ravi Shastri, was named champion of champions for the series. Last evening’s win for India followed up its controversial win in the 1983 Prudential World Cup in England when it beat the West Indies.
