Berryfruit shipments to U.S. in trouble
Wellington reporter New Zealand berryfruit exports to the United States have run into difficulties, but it seems not as a result of the A.N.Z.U.S. issue. The claim that New Zealand was being penalised because of A.N.Z.U.S. was made in Parliament by National’s spokesman on agriculture, Mr lan McLean (Tarawera.) However, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, the
delays that berryfruits are experiencing in the United States have their roots in events before the A.N.Z.U.S. issue erupted. The United States Food and Drug Administration has no formal readings for the residues from German pesticides such as New Zealand uses on its berryfruits. Ministry instructions cover this, but a load was sent last year and the U.S.F.D.A. warned against
prepetition. Now another cargo has gone and the U.S.F.D.A, is reacting in line with its policy when it finds chemical residues for which it has no guidelines. The New Zealand berryfruit is now being refumigated in store in the United States, while the Ministry is trying to reach agreement with the U.S.F.D.A. on future shipments. The de-lays-are for several days, and may last longer.
