Taber to speak
Brian Taber, the former Australian wicket-keeper, is the guest speaker at the annual DB Canterbury Cricket Personality of the Year dinner at the end of this month.
Taber, aged 44, kept wicket for Australia in 16 tests, starting on the tour to South Africa in 1967, and concluding with all nine tests on Australia’s tour of India and South Africa in 1970.
The New South Welshmanis one of only a handful of wicket-keepers to have taken 20 or more dismissals in a test series — against South Africa in 1967 — and once took eight dismissals in a test, one short of the world record. The other two speakers at the dinner, which will be held at the Old Orchard on March 27, are the former New Zealand Olympic hockey gold medallist,
Barry Maister, and Dr Hamid Ikram, the senior cardiologist at The Princess Margaret Hospital. The judges will be the sports editor of the Christchurch “Star,” Mr Bill Mayston, and New Zealand’s foremost writer on cricket, Mr Dick Brittenden. Tickets can be obtained from Anderson and Hill sports shop, or the High School Old Boys’ cricket club.
