More than 1 in 10 work for State

Wellington reporter More than one in 10 New Zealanders work in the public sector, excluding the Armed Forces. A rundown of the figures has been given by the Minister of Statistics, Mr Tizard, in response to a question in Parliament. It shows that in 1960, 8.1 per cent of the total population, not just the workforce,, was employed by the State. By 1970, the proportion had risen to 9.2 per cent. Then, in 1980, it peaked at 11.2 per cent before dropping to 10.6 per cent in 1984, probably as a result of the National Government’s sink-ing-lid policy.
